Joseph Henry Hidley

(1830 - 28 September 1872)

Artist, House Painter, Taxidermist, and Floral Arranger. Hidley was born in what is now North Greenbush. His father died when he was four years old and his mother married William W. Coonradt of Brunswick. Hidley is best know in Brunswick for scened he painted on window and fireplace panels in serveral are homes. He produced several landscape paintings of neighboring towns but none depicting Brunswick have ever been found. (New York State Library, Manuscripst and Special Collections.

Joseph H. Hidley, whose paintings depicted townscapes and rural life in New England, was virtually unknown as an artist during his lifetime of forty-two years which ended in death from consumption. He was born in 1830 in Greenbush, New York, and left an orphan at the age of four when his father died, preceded in death by three other siblings of the young Hidley. When he later married, only three of his six children lived beyond infancy.
